National Security Agency workers can now safely use Microsoft Surface tablets devices for data mining, intelligence gathering, or more humdrum work like checking email.
Microsoft’s (msft, +0.08%) Surface tablets and the tech giant’s Windows 10 operating system are now officially part of the NSA’s list of approved technologies that its employees can use when dealing with classified information.
It should be noted that as of now, the only Windows 10 devices that the NSA deems safe to use for its workers are the Surface tablets. The NSA has not yet approved other any other Windows 10-powered personal computers built by third-party vendors like HP Inc. (hpq, +0.12%) or Dell Technologies to its list of sanctioned devices.

As we inch closer and closer to Super Bowl Sunday, Microsoft is offering up a solid deal on its NFL Type Covers for Surface Pro 4. Right now, you can pick up an NFL Type Cover for just $99 at the Microsoft Store (via Neowin). For those keeping track, that’s a full $60 discount on its usual $160 price tag.
Microsoft began shipping the Surface Studio in November and has now released its first firmware improvements for the pricey iMac challenger. It’s not a huge update but does target improvements to reliability and responsiveness, according to Microsoft’s release notes.
A new driver for the Nvidia graphics card cuts the time it takes for the Studio to wake up from sleep mode, while improving compatibility with new games.
The Surface component of the firmware update also cuts wake-up times for the Studio and improves the accuracy of its speech-recognition module. Meanwhile, a driver update for the Intel Smart Sound chip should to improve the reliability of Skype call audio and Skype notifications.
In November 2016, Microsoft reported its Surface family is becoming increasingly popular and “more people are switching from Macs to Surface than ever before.” The company noted that November was its best month ever for consumer Surface sales. According to the tech firm, professional users are converting to its high-end hybrid PCs – the Surface Pro 4 tablet, Surface Book laptop and Surface Studio desktop – due to the disappointment of the Apple MacBook Pro.
Microsoft Surface Studio
The Surface Studio 28-inch all-in-one computer ships with a standard Surface Pen, an updated Sculpt mouse, and a keyboard. Microsoft says that the Studio is a must-have machine for creative and professionals users. According to the company, the all-in-one PC is designed for “how people naturally create and bring ideas to life.”
The Studio features an ultra-HD 4.5K screen that delivers 63% more pixels than a state-of-the-art 4K TV. It can be converted into a digital canvas from a workstation. In the Studio Mode, it sits at a 20-degree angle, the same angle as a standard drafting board, making it ideal for sketching, writing and designing.
A recent report from CNet is indicating that Microsoft’s Surface Pro series is starting to closely compete with Apple’s MacBook Pro line of laptops, if not becoming better. While the laptop isn’t released yet and is expected to be coming around 2017, its specs already speaks of a clear message that it would blow the current MacBook Pro 2016 out of the water.
