For a $2,999 price point, you might wonder — is the Microsoft Surface Studio desktop really worth it? I tested one recently and found myself being drawn to a few important features that made it worth the high price even compared to similar models from Dell and even Apple.
So let’s say that thanks to Hurricane Harvey your Apple iPhone or Apple iPad sustained serious water damage that basically destroyed one or both devices. Despite the IP67 certification rating on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has made it clear that water damage is not covered by its warranty. So under normal circumstances, the flooding in Texas would normally lead to water logged iPhone units that would not be replaced by Apple, even if they are supposed to withstand a submersion to 3.3-feet for as long as 30-minutes.
But that doesn’t mean that Apple isn’t going out of its way to make life easier for those affected by the Hurricane. While not considered official policy, Apple is said to be offering free repairs to its devices that took on water and were damaged as a result. Apple is also believed to be offering free repairs to its devices that were damaged due to an impact that took place as a result of the Hurricane.
Lenovo is making its Surface competitor a lot better this year. After slow iterating the Miix tablet from its Core M roots, the new Miix 520 will include Intel’s 8th generation quad-core i7 processor. It’s an addition that pushes its CPU performance past Microsoft’s new Surface Pro, alongside 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and a 12.2-inch 1920 x 1200 display. Lenovo also offers a USB-C port, the company’s own active pen support, and an optional 3D camera for capturing images.
“Since jumping into the hardware market with its Surface line, Microsoft has had success making inroads into the tablet and 2-in-1 market,” Peter Tsai, senior technology analyst at Spiceworks, told eWEEK. “Many IT pros praised the hardware’s sleek design, powerful specs in a highly-portable package, and ability to run Windows, which allows employees to be productive while giving IT departments management flexibility.”
The Surface Pro, for example, offers corporate IT buyers a blend of premium packaging and powerful processors. Add long-lasting battery life to the equation and business travelers can legitimately get work done on a cross-country or trans-Atlantic flight.
After using the new Surface Pen for the last week, I agree with Microsoft that this pen is the “fastest on the planet.” The new Surface Pen responsiveness and speed make it a dream to use. I use the Surface Pen to take notes when I am in meetings in OneNote, and use it when I color using my favorite Windows 10 coloring app, Zen: Coloring Book for Adults. I am by no means an artist, but when I use the new Surface Pen, I feel like one.
Why it matters to you: Microsoft is maintaining its pledge to keep updating its older products in the Surface Line, and this one adds new support for Type Covers. Microsoft’s latest firmware update for the Surface Pro 3 is focused entirely on bringing various systems in line with the Surface Pro Type Cover and Surface Pro Signature Type Covers. It doesn’t add anything revolutionary, but this update does improve compatibility and has no effect on battery life or security.
A good cookie should never be too far from reach, or at least that’s what the crew at CHiP thinks. The company has developed a machine and app that allows users to get fresh-baked cookies into their hands (read: mouths) in 10 minutes.
Those cookies come from pods—yes, like Keurig—and are baked in a slow cooker-looking device that also happens to resemble a grown-up version of an Easy Bake Oven.
Of course, it’s perfectly possible that there’s no black Surface Book and that a video producer thought that a recolored Surface Book just looked cool without appreciating just how distinctive the Surface Book’s design is.
Sorry, Consumer Reports, but you don’t know the Surface like I do.
